The New Tab You May Have Ignored
Open WhatsApp and tap the Updates tab. Below your friends’ statuses there is a section many people in Pakistan scroll past without a second look: Channels. News outlets, cricket teams, celebrities, government departments and small businesses now post one-way updates there — and unlike groups, nobody can see your number when you follow them.
This guide explains what Channels actually are, how they differ from groups and communities, how to follow and manage them, and how to create your own channel safely if you run a business, a page or a study group.
What Exactly Is a WhatsApp Channel?
A channel is a one-way broadcast. The channel’s admins post text, photos, videos, stickers and polls. Followers can read everything and react with emojis, but they cannot reply, and they cannot see each other.
Think of it like a noticeboard: one person pins notices, everyone else reads them quietly. Your profile photo, name and phone number stay hidden from other followers and from the channel admins — admins see only an approximate follower count and reactions. That privacy is the biggest difference from a WhatsApp group, where every member’s number is visible to all.
Channels vs Groups vs Communities
- Group: everyone can talk; everyone’s number is visible; best for family and friends.
- Community: a collection of related groups under one umbrella; members can still see each other inside groups.
- Channel: only admins post; followers are invisible to each other; best for announcements, news and updates to a large audience.
If you run a Facebook fan page, a tuition academy, a shop or a YouTube channel, a WhatsApp Channel lets your audience follow your updates without you sharing your personal number with thousands of strangers.

How to Find and Follow a Channel
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Updates tab.
- Scroll to Channels and tap Explore (or the + / “Find channels” option).
- Browse by category — news, sports, entertainment, business — or use the search bar to type a name, for example your favourite cricket team or news channel.
- Open the channel, read a few posts to confirm it is the real one, and tap Follow.
A word of caution: popular names attract copies. Prefer channels with the green verification tick next to the name, and be careful with channels that promise prizes, free balance or “double data” tricks — verified brands and media houses do not run such schemes.
Managing the Channels You Follow
Following too many channels turns the Updates tab into noise. A few habits keep it useful:
- Mute noisy channels: open the channel, tap its name, and switch on Mute notifications (or tap the bell icon). You will still see posts when you visit, without buzzing all day.
- Unfollow freely: same info screen has Unfollow. There is no penalty and the admin is not told.
- Reactions and polls: tap and hold a post to react with an emoji, and vote in polls with one tap — these are the only ways followers interact, and they are anonymous in the sense that other followers cannot see who reacted.
- Sharing: you can forward a channel post to your chats, or tap the channel’s name and share its link with friends who might like it.
Channel posts are not saved on your phone like group media — they stay inside the channel, which quietly saves storage. Posts are generally visible for up to 30 days, so a channel is for current updates, not an archive.

How to Create Your Own Channel
Creating a channel is free and takes two minutes:
- Go to the Updates tab, tap the + next to Channels, and choose Create channel.
- Accept the guidelines, then add a name (keep it clear and searchable — your shop, academy or page name), a short description of what followers will get, and a recognisable profile photo.
- Tap Create channel. Share your channel link (found under the channel’s info) on your Facebook page, status and groups so people can follow.
To grow honestly, post useful updates on a steady rhythm — new stock, class schedules, match reminders — rather than flooding followers ten times a day. One admin tip: you can add other admins later from the channel info screen, which helps if you run the channel with a partner.
Finding Good Channels Without the Noise
The Explore list can feel endless, so start from names you already trust: the news channels you watch, your cricket board and teams during the season, your university or board’s official announcements, and brands you actually buy from. Two or three quality channels beat thirty random ones.
Search results also show how many followers a channel has — a big, steady following plus the green tick is a good sign, while a “famous” name with a few hundred followers and prize posts is almost certainly fake. You can also discover channels through links people share on Facebook and in statuses: the link opens a preview, and you follow only if the posts look genuine. Remember, following is reversible in two taps, so there is no harm in trying a channel for a week and unfollowing if it posts more adverts than value.
Staying Safe with Channels
- Your number stays private when you follow — but if you also join the same brand’s group or message an admin directly, normal visibility rules apply there.
- Do not trust money offers inside channels: no genuine channel will ask followers to send money, share bank OTPs, or “verify” accounts through links.
- Report bad channels: open the channel info and choose Report if it spreads scams or harmful content.
- Admins: never post customers’ personal details or photos taken from others without permission — channel posts can be forwarded anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can other followers see my phone number in a channel?
No. Followers cannot see each other’s numbers, names or profile photos, and admins cannot see your number either — this is the main privacy advantage of channels over groups.
Is creating a WhatsApp Channel paid?
No, creating and running a channel is free. You only need an updated WhatsApp and a few minutes to set the name, description and photo.
Can I reply to posts inside a channel?
No, channels are one-way. You can react with emojis and vote in polls, but there is no reply or comment option for followers.
How do I stop a channel from bothering me without unfollowing?
Open the channel, tap its name at the top, and turn on mute notifications. You keep following quietly and can catch up whenever you open the Updates tab.
